Update: The Rusty Brake Line Automotive Crime

Recently, thousands of complaints have been filed to the Office of Defects and Investigations of the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration in relation to rusty brake lines and overall brake failure in GMC and Chevy Trucks. According to Channel 7 Action News, GM has admitted to knowledge of the complaints, but wrote it off as an illegitimate safety issue. A GM spokesman was quoted stating the brake line issue “happens over time” and was “not a safety issue”. GM reports this is happening to only 1:1000 trucks, which is a high ratio to most considering the amount of possibly-affected trucks that are still on the road today.

In an attempt to extinguish negative PR, GM has made a $2,000 dollar brake repair kit available for a mere $500 to all that were affected by the rusty brakes. The kit includes a nylon coated brake line resistant to rust that can be installed by an authorized GM dealer. But the real questions that arise from this dangerous situation are; how will this affect this construction of future GM vehicles, and will this brake repair kit compensate for damage caused by the brake failures or damages yet to come?
