Shanghai, China-  In 2000, The Swiss Sebastien narrowly escaped death in a trial run during Chinese Grand Prix practice. The F1 Formula One race car experienced total brake failure on both it’s front right and front left tires during it’s sixth lap on the practice run, causing the wheels to fly off both sides and reduce the car to an immobile piece of carbon. The crash left debris scattered all across the Shanghai International Circuit, forcing race director Charlie Whiting to call for the red flags and stop the practice session.

Buemi was quoted after the incident stating ” There’s not much to say about what happened. I braked, the wheels came off and that was it. Physically, I was fine though. But I have to say, I am extremely disappointed that, once again, through no fault of my own, I have been unable to run for almost all of the three hours available.”

To prevent something like this from happening during the actual race, all cars had new uprights installed from a validated batch.

When asked if the crash would knock his confidence, Buemi said: “Not really – something broke, it happened, we changed all the car, so it will be fine. I don’t think about it at all.”
