RANT: Purell, Brakes and Ebola

I don’t get it.

Since the dawn of investigative journalism, using fear to sell automotive brake services has become taboo. It is not that the threat of brake failure is a fabricated phenomenon, it happens everyday.

But, if you use fear to sell a set of brake pads or rotors, all of the sudden you are a criminal accused of trying to defraud the motoring public. But, if a doctor, building contractor or pharmaceutical company uses fear to sell, it is accepted and even celebrated. I just don’t get it. You have a greater chance of dying in a car wreck because of neglected brakes than you do from not using Purell hand sanitizer.

But, Purell can post this on Twitter:

purell:ebola:fear:twitter

Only one person has died in the US from Ebola and only two people have contracted Ebola from exposure inside the US. You have a better chance at winning the lottery than getting Ebola. During this same time period, it is estimated that more than 2,000 people will die in traffic accidents.

We need to bring fear back. Forget brake dust and lifetime warranties, I want  to bring life-or-death fear into the hearts of drivers who are looking for a cheap brake job and not the safest brake job.

If Purell can use Ebola, we can use crashes and death.
