BRAKE TECH: Safer Wheel Bearings

The foundation of any brake system is the wheel bearing. It is also a huge contributor to the safety of the vehicle. A bad wheel bearing can cause pulsation and low pedal conditions. In a worse case situation, it can cause the wheel to fall off the vehicle.

A good wheel bearing can improve fuel efficiency, reduce brake noise and even improve handling. Hub units are nothing new. But, one type of wheel bearing hub unit  is capturing the attention of some techs.

At Timken, their automotive product specialists have been receiving many questions regarding the use of formed hubs on both driven and non-driven versions of the same application. The bearings have a cold rolled steel lip that locks the center into the housing and even sets the pre-load.
