This magazine cover may seem like it stereotypes women drivers. But, if you just exchange the cell phone for the makeup it would be more applicable today. In the early 1960s, safety and styling were growing trends with consumers. By the end of the decade, performance and comfort were the buzz words with muscle cars ruling the roads. Unfortunately, those trends faded thanks to oil embargos and economic inflation. By the middle of the 1970s, the focus became fuel economy and affordability.

The two things that never changed were the need for safer brakes and inspection.
